Despite currently serving a two-year ban by the NSAC for multiple failed drug tests, and being relieved of his duty as a UFC on FOX analyst, Chael Sonnen is still one of the most talked about figures in the sport.
The 38-year-old is in the headlines again this week: Sonnen ridiculed Fedor Emelianenko on Monday, made waves with his #FreeNickDiaz t-shirts yesterday and is now insinuating that the UFC are in the process of booking Emelianenko vs. Anderson Silva.
The former title challenger discussed the rumour with Frank Mir on his ‘You’re Welcome’ podcast. Transcription per BJPenn.com.
“So, you might have heard this rumor, but if you haven’t then I’ll start if for you. I can confirm that this is being tried to put together. This is happening at the UFC, but they’re trying to put a fight together Frank, 205 pounds, Fedor Emelianenko -you ready for this?- vs. Anderson Silva.”
Anderson Silva is serving a one-year suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following failed drug tests after his clash with Nick Diaz at UFC 183. Silva tested positive for two anabolic steroids: drostanolone and androstane. ‘The Spider’ could return to the Octagon as early as February, next year.
After retiring in 2012, Fedor Emelianenko announced his return to the MMA sphere in July, and it’s expected that the Russian heavyweight legend will reveal his signing in the coming weeks. The 38-year-old has fought at heavyweight his entire career and is looking to be in optimal shape ahead of his return, as a recent Instagram post revealed.
