Former UFC competitor Chael Sonnen stated in an interview with Submission Radio that he is set to face Josh Barnett at the next Metamoris event, which takes place at the end of October or beginning of November. In fact, he already predicted how the match will play out. He promised to win by taking Barnett’s “fat ass down” so he will “never get up”. “And then I’m going to whisper in his ear, `Welcome to the next 20 minutes of your life’,” Sonnen said in the interview which you can listen to above.
As you might have guessed, it didn’t Barnett long to respond. On the podcast of UFC commentators Jon Anik and Kenny Florian, Barnett revealed that the fight isn’t official but that he would be up for it anytime.
“I couldn’t think of a worse thing than to be anywhere with Chael Sonnen for 20 minutes,” Barnett said (via MMA Fighting). “There’s no contract. Nothing has been signed on my end, but man, 20 minutes with Chael. I would be embarrassed to let it go that long to be perfectly honest. It wouldn’t be a match. Maybe I’ll lock him up in a few different things and let him go. Just keep going and give him a free private lesson that he got paid for.”
Metamoris is an event series organized by Ralek Gracie, which regularly pairs big stars from the MMA and grappling circuit in grappling matches. There is a 20-minute time limit, but no judges. Fights that go the distance are scored a draw. Barnett has already competed in two Metamoris bouts against highly-touted grapplers Dean Lister and Ryron Gracie, both of whom he submitted. Sonnen fought once for Metamoris in a rather lackluster draw against Renato Sobral in May. He will debut as commentator for World Series of Fighting this Friday.
