Mayweather vs. Berto results recap: Floyd scores 49th victory in dominant fashion

On Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather scored his 49th and final victory against Andre Berto in Las Vegas, Nevada. Coming into this bout, few doubted Mayweather and it should come as no surprise that the undefeated champion thoroughly dominated his foe. Over the course of 12 rounds, Mayweather used his  expertly timed jab and patented footwork to neutralize Berto’s attempts at offense.

Official result: Floyd Mayweather defeats Andre Berto by unanimous decision (117-111, 118-110, 120-108)

What was the high point of the fight?

Watching Floyd Mayweather fight is like looking at a fine work of art – it may be boring, but you can’t help but appreciate the beauty. Over twelve rounds Mayweather played his familiar matador role, jabbing and uppercutting Berto, the aggressive bull. The high point of this fight was Mayweather’s ability to land and subsequently move out of range for the countering Berto.

Where do these two go from here?

Following his win against Berto, Mayweather announced his retirement from the sport of boxing. It remains to be seen if Mayweather will infact remain retired, but his legacy has already been written and he will go down in history as the best boxer of his generation. While Mayweather may be going out on top of the rankings, his popularity has waned and it is sad to see him retire with such a lack of fanfare.

No one expected Berto to win, so his defeat should come as no surprise. At 32, Berto still has a lot left to give the sport of boxing, though his stock has been significantly diminished over the last 4 years. Berto’s next fight needs to be carefully picked – he really cannot afford to taste defeat again or his drawing power and ranking will plummet.

Watch now, later, or never?
