Lauded as one of the most active fighters on the UFC roster, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone has become a fan favourite. Since 2013, the Greg Jackson fighter has racked up eight consecutive wins and currently sits as the #2 lightweight in the world.
Cowboy is slated for a championship fight with Rafael dos Anjos, but the 155 lbs. champion is currently rehabilitating an injury and is expected to return either by the end of the year or in early 2016. The Albuquerque-based fighter expressed his disinterest in acquiring UFC gold earlier in June and cited taxes as the reason for his rampant activity in the Octagon.
Now, with almost three months since his last fight against John Makdessi, Cerrone is becoming increasingly impatient with Rafael dos Anjos. Responding to a fan on Twitter, the 32-year-old claimed he doesn’t have time to wait until next year to fight dos Anjos and is considering a move to the welterweight division.
Cerrone would be entering unknown territory at 170 lbs., as his entire UFC career has been spent in the lightweight division. Given the lack of 155 lbs. contenders, it’s unlikely Dana White will allow the former kickboxer to risk taking another fight, even it means waiting until February.
