Several MMA fighters were quick to show their disgust at Rousimar Palhares after the World Series of Fighting 22 event on August 1st. ‘Toquinho’, released from the UFC in 2013 after holding onto a heel hook on Mike Pierce after the referee had intervened, was involved in more foul play in his welterweight title fight with Jake Shields.
The Brazilian repeatedly gouged Shields’ eyes and held onto a kimura after the referee had stepped in. The former UFC competitor also applied extra torque to the submission while Shields was tapping out in desperation.

At this point of his career @ToquinhoMMA should be banned from MMA for life. Cheater at every opportunity. Major officiating error. #WSOF

The 6th time Palhares held a submission past the tap. He should be banned, or at least given a lengthy suspension. pic.twitter.com/vLbo43DdTC

Man, I just keep thinking about what might of happened at the Sheilds fight if the Diaz bros hadn’t been kicked out of the arena already.

Not sure how any commission is licensing him at this point, let alone organizations promoting him. https://t.co/z5oeQpFO17

WSOF vice president Abdel-Aziz will be reviewing Palhares’ actions to decide whether the champion should be stripped of the welterweight title. The 35-year-old earned his third title defense with a win over Jake Shields, but given his repeated unsportsmanlike conduct, Palhares could serve a suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission. According to Aziz, the NAC has withheld Rousimar’s win bonus for the time being.
