Glory has their main event set for Dynamite. Bellator and Glory have announced that the Glory portion of the Dynamite card will be headlined by Saulo Cavalari vs. Zack Mwekassa for the vacant Glory Light Heavyweight title. Dynamite, presented by Bellator and Glory and featuring MMA and kickboxing fights, will take place on September 19.
As we previously reported, the Glory Light Heavyweight title is currently vacant as the company decided to strip former champion Gokhan Saki of the belt due to inactivity. Reports indicate that they wanted Saki to defend the belt at Dynamite, and when they could not come to terms, he was stripped. Given that, it’s no surprise to see Cavalari vs. Mwekassa here.
Brazil’s Saulo Cavalari (31-2; 5-1 Glory) is the top contender by virtue of winning the Glory 18 Light Heavyweight contender tournament last November. His opponent here is Zack Mwekassa (13-2; 3-1 Glory), the man Cavalari beat in the tournament finals. Both men are 1-0 since in Glory. Given Mwekassa’s popularity ever since his big KO win over Pat Barry last year, and the fact that the first fight came in a tournament, he’s a pretty logical opponent here. In that first fight, Mwekassa slowed down considerably as the fight wore on – will be interesting to see how he does here in a single fight format.
This is the first fight set for the Glory portion of Dynamite. Paul Daley will also be competing under Glory rules, but his opponent is yet to be named. Joe Schilling was going to be a part of the card, but he was forced off the card due to his recent KO loss in Bellator. On the Bellator side, the show will feature Tito Ortiz challenging Liam McGeary for the Bellator Light Heavyweight title, plus a four man tournament featuring King Mo, Emanuel Newton, Phil Davis, and Linton Vassell.
Before Dynamite, Glory will be in action next Friday, August 7 with Glory 23 live on Spike. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more updates on Dynamite and Glory 23.
