Great fights are defined by the questions that precede them, and the answers they provide. UFC 189 is full to brim with such matchups. In Brandon Thatch and Gunnar Nelson we have two faltering prospects with opposing skillsets, both attempting to get their careers back on track. In Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald we have two MMA naturals, one reaching peak form near the end of his career, and one striving to become the greatest fighter in a gym known for greatness.
And then there’s the main event. Chad Mendes and Conor McGregor are set to ask one another some very difficult questions, and in the ensuing action we will find the answers we crave. Did McGregor ever really deserve a shot at Jose Aldo’s belt? Can he deal with a standout wrestler? Is Chad Mendes capable of striking with a knockout puncher as dangerous as himself? Does he have the champion mentality, or will he forever be a bridesmaid?
