Sinead O’Connor is, by its definition, a one-hit wonder in the United States. Her worldwide hit was the Prince-penned “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990, which topped music charts across the world and was nominated for a Grammy award. Unfortunately, her 2nd biggest mark in the US was this infamous Saturday Night Live appearance where she covered Bob Marley’s “War” a cappella and then tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II in a protest against the Catholic Church.
While O’Connor never achieved consistent musical success in the American mainstream market, she was still a major hit in her native Ireland. And believe it or not, she’ll be performing the walkout song of none other than Conor McGregor at UFC 189 next week in Las Vegas. This news was confirmed on O’Connor’s verified Facebook page:
“The Foggy Dew” was sung by O’Connor in a collaboration with The Chieftains back in 1995.
At least from my own memory, this may very well be a historic first time that a recording artist has actually performed a UFC fighter’s walkout song live. EDIT: Tito Ortiz was accompanied by a Limp Bizkit performance of “Vendetta” before his fight with Ken Shamrock at UFC 40, so there’s precedent! I can only hope this opens the door for hologram Tupac to bring someone out in a future pay-per-view.
McGregor fights Chad Mendes for the UFC’s interim featherweight title in the main event of the July 11th pay-per-view.
