News broke on Tuesday that Jose Aldo has suffered a rib injury while sparring and has put his UFC 189 main event bout against Conor McGregor in jeopardy. They’re still waiting on what the test results reveal tomorrow, but if it’s as bad as they think it is, Aldo could be out until October on the earliest.
“If the fracture is really confirmed, Aldo will have to stop training, do nothing for three or four weeks until it’s fixed, and then he would be able to do any exercise without forcing his rib,” Nova Uniao head coach Andre Pederneiras said. “And then he would need a normal time to do a training camp: three months. I believe this fight wouldn’t happen before October.”
Pederneiras also spoke to combate about how Aldo has been dealing with the injury.
“He cried. He wants this fight bad, everybody invested a lot in this,” he said. “I was with him the whole afternoon. He’s heartbroken. He wants to fight anyway. Now we have to wait for the exam results. Aldo is in deep pain.”
According to the report, Aldo injured his rib while sparring with undefeated lightweight Alcides Nunes, who landed a kick to Jose’s midsection. Kickboxing champ Andy Souwer was also brought in from Holland to train with Aldo but barely had any chance to help out before the injury occurred.
