Neither Cain Velasquez nor Fabricio Werdum can put Werdum’s statements regarding Velasquez being an “American who thinks he’s Mexican” to rest. The Brazilian interim world champion made some remarks in the first episode of UFC 188 Embedded. In this fourth episode, he justified his comments once more.
“If you’re born in the US, you’re American. Joana, my daughter, is American”, Werdum said. “She’s American, she was born in the US. Lyoto Machida doesn’t represent Japan. People know that he is of Japanese descent, but he wasn’t born in Japan. He’s Brazilian. I don’t lie or anything like that, I tell the truth. Cain Velasquez is American.”
Over the course of the last days, Werdum has fired multiple shots in direction of Velasquez and even his teammate Luke Rockhold, that were caught on tape during the filming for the Embedded video blog. Now, another popular member of the American Kickboxing Academy confronted Werdum after the media workouts in Mexico City: UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
“Man”, he said. “What?”, Werdum responded. “You should have just stayed quiet”, was Cormier’s answer. But all of a sudden the intense atmosphere was gone and both men laughed, shook hands and exchanged nice words.
“I like your personality”, said Werdum, and pointed his finger at Cormier. “Your’s.”
“And what about Luke Rockhold?”, Cormier asked.
Werdum waved his hand and said: “Who? Nobody?”
Velasquez, who was sitting at a table next to the situation, said nothing, but Rockhold, next to him, didn’t like it at all and called Werdum “a fake”.
When Cormier received a little present from a waiter, he thanked him, turned to Werdum and said: “See, this is how you treat people. You don’t talk s— about them, Werdum.” Again, everybody was laughing, which seemed kind of awkward, considering the things that have been said, and the fact, that Velasquez and Werdum will fight each other tomorrow night.
Later, Cormier sat down with his team and they discussed their common enemy. Again, Velasquez didn’t say a word, Rockhold seemed legitimately upset and Cormier said: “Listen, the thing is: He likes me and Cain, the problem is with you”, and seemed to find that very funny. Rockhold didn’t.
“I think he’s trying to enjoy every little bit he can hold on to”, he said, and clapped his hands. “Hold on to what you have, you’re about to lose it all.”
Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum will fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship this Saturday at UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico.
