UFC 188 video: Werdum thinks Velasquez’s knee surgery was ‘part of his strategy’

After Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum conducted themselves in a rather respectful manner during their time as coaches on the first-ever season of The Ultimate Fighter Latin America, the latter seems to be taking a page out of Conor McGregors book now that their big title fight is only a few days away.

In the first episode of the popular video-blog series Embedded, Werdum already made some snappy remarks about Velasquez being proud of his Mexican heritage, while living in the United States. Now, in the second episode, he addressed the champion’s knee injury, that prevented their fight from happening on it’s original date last November.

“I’m sure Cain had an injured knee. No doubt about it. But, it wasn’t a surgery that needed to be done right away”, Werdum said. “It was minimal, very simple. Easy. I think that it was part of his strategy, because he knew that I had the will to win and that I was going to win. Beat him like I beat Mark Hunt. That didn’t deter me and I’m even more pumped for this fight, because I want to be the champion. There can be only one, and that one is me.”

Velasquez and Werdum were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 180 in November last year, but Velasquez pulled out of the bout in October with a torn meniscus and sprained MCL in his right knee, and underwent surgery right away. He was replaced by Mark Hunt, who fought Werdum for the interim heavyweight belt. Werdum won the fight via TKO in the second round.

Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum will now finally meet in a title unification bout this Saturday at UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico. You can watch the whole second episode of Embedded above.
