Vitor Belfort wasn’t the only challenge Chris Weidman had to overcome at UFC 187. In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani noted how Weidman looked ‘a little off’ during his walkout to cage on Saturday evening. The champ admitted that he was struck with some very sudden bowel movements when Belfort’s walkout music boomed through the arena. Chris wasn’t sure if he’d have to turn back from the Octagon and dash to the nearest toilet, as he explained to Ariel Helwani:
“I’ll be honest with you,” Weidman said. “It was my first time ever where I had to go to the bathroom, bad. I’m like, ‘I cannot believe this is gonna happen – I’m gonna crap myself in the middle of this cage.’ As soon as Vitor’s walkout music came on, all I could think about was – ‘I don’t know if I should go to the bathroom now or hold it. I don’t know what’s gonna happen’. That’s what was going on all through my mind the whole time I was walking out. I was wondering if I was going to become the first person to run away from the fight to go to the bathroom. I gave Ray (Ray Longo) the flag during the walkout because I was just trying to focus on not crapping myself,” Weidman said.
Despite Weidman’s bowel troubles, the All-American went on to crush Vitor Belfort with a thunderous barrage of ground and pound mid-way through the first round. The Brazilian backed Weidman up against the cage with a furious flurry of punches in the opening minute, but Weidman deflected any damage with a tight high guard and circled from danger when Belfort reloaded. Soon after, the defending champion scored a takedown and brutalised ‘The Phenom’ on the ground, prompting referee Herb Dean to intervene.
Chris Weidman is expected to face either Luke Rockhold or ‘Jacare’ Souza for his 4th title defence, after both men impressed with championship defining performances at UFC on FOX 15 in April.
