As MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported on last night’s edition of UFC Tonight, UFC middleweight contender Ronaldo Souza underwent surgery on his left knee. According to his manager Gilberto Faria, the number-two ranked Brazilian hurt his meniscus during the quick submission win over Chris Camozzi at UFC on FOX: Machida vs. Rockhold in April.
The man known as “Jacare” expects to be back by September, and either wants an immediate title opportunity against Chris Weidman or Vitor Belfort, who will fight for the belt this Saturday at UFC 187, or a rematch for the number-one contender’s spot against number-one ranked Luke Rockhold, says Faria.
Souza is currently riding an eight-fight winning streak since he lost the Strikeforce middleweight title to Rockhold in 2011. Seven of those eight wins have been stoppages, five of them in the first round. Still, it is very likely that Rockhold will receive the next shot at the belt, because of his recent and very impressive performance against Lyoto Machida.
