Former boxing champ, Winky Wright: Dana White is the reason the UFC is where it’s at right now

In the immediate aftermath of the “fight of the century” between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, there has been much speculation about the evolution of boxing and where the sport will go in the future. From a commercial standpoint, the fight was highly successful, breaking PPV records and soaring to over 4 million buys (a fact that Chael Sonnen disputes). But, one boxing great thinks the sport needs a dominant figure head and he feels UFC president Dana White is the man for the job.

Speaking exclusively to TMZ, former undisputed light-middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright, sounded off on why he feels Dana White is the man to steer boxing into the future.

“The reason UFC is where it’s at right now is because Dana White controls everything. He makes it happen.”

Winky went on to state that he felt there were too many promoters in boxing and that promoters weren’t making the fights the fans wanted to see, unlike the UFC which always put the two best fighters against each other:

“Dana White doesn’t care about records. It’s all about you fight the next top guy. If you think you’re the best … we are going to match you up with the best.”

While Wright’s comments do hold some truth, boxing once again proved its ability to pull in fans last weekend when Canelo Alvarez knocked out James Kirkland in front of 31,000 fans at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
