Jussier Formiga doesn’t want Demetrious Johnson reigning over the UFC’s flyweight division any longer. The Brazilian contender believes it is time for a change in the weight class that has never had a different champion ever since it was incorporated in the UFC, in 2012.
Although Formiga recognizes how good Mighty Mouse is, he still claims such a dominant champion could be bad for the division.
“I think such a dominant champion hinders the division’s visibility”.Formiga told Tatame. “I don’t want to take anything away from him, but we need a new champion. There are plenty of tough guys out there to do it.”
In a weight class so criticized because of its small fighters and fast-paced clashes, Formiga believes they need someone along the lines of Conor McGregor in order to get the casual fans to care more for the flyweights.
“We need a Conor McGregor, and as fast as possible, also because that would bring us more money. People say there are no knockouts in our divisions or call us midgets, but our fights are really technical and fast paced. We have to embrace constructive criticism.”
Jussier Formiga, who is on a two-fight winning streak, will look to make three in a row is when he faces Wilson Reis in Goiania at UFC Fight Night 67 on May 30, which will be headlined by welterweights Carlos Condit and Thiago Alves.
