The UFC 183 drug scandal involving both Nick Diaz and Anderson Silva set the MMA world abuzz with controversy on Jan. 31 – prompting many pundits to scorn Anderson Silva and mock Stockton’s finest for his third testing failure. Anderson Silva was found with traces of drostanolone and androsterone (steroids) and anti-anxiety medication while Nick Diaz was popped for marijuana metabolites. While The Spider’s alarming results sent shockwaves throughout the MMA community, Diaz’ marijuana fixation added some comic relief to the situation.
The 37-fight veteran, Diaz, will be hiring a law firm to appeal his failed marijuana test, and it appears as though the Stockton menace may have a fighting chance in the court room. MMAJunkie recently announced that Diaz was subject to three rigorous screenings on the night of his dramatic clash with Anderson Silva on Jan. 31; two of which came back clean.
The former Strikeforce champ gave three urine samples which were examined by two different laboratories – SMRTL and Quest Diagnostics. Diaz was requested to submit samples at the following times:
7:12 p.m. – Diaz’s urine sample was analyzed for drug abuse before the Anderson Silva bout by SMRTL (Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory) which came back clean.
10:38 p.m – Diaz was requested to submit a sample to Quest Diagnostics after the fight, which revealed double the permitted limit of marijuana metabolites in his system (300 ng/mL)
11:55 p.m. – A third and final test was examined by SMRTL which revealed Nick had tested clean.
Diaz – along with opponent Anderson Silva – is scheduled to stand before the NSAC later in May and it is expected that Silva’s unanimous decision win at UFC 183 will be overturned to a no contest, while both fighters are likely to be punished with hefty suspensions.
