We’d gone the entire weekend without discussing Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao in an MMA context, but that national crisis has since been corrected. Last week, UFC featherweight title challenger Conor McGregor told Esquire magazine that he would “kill” Mayweather in less than 30 seconds in an MMA fight. McGregor later added that he’d “wrap around him like a boa constrictor and strangle him”.
Mayweather was told these remarks by TMZ Sports, and he responded in kind by calling McGregor a “joke” and that he doesn’t take him seriously.
“I don’t take that dude seriously. He’s just trying to get himself some publicity.”
Well I guess it worked, because even mentioning Mayweather’s or Pacquiao’s name in the UFC world virtually guarantees you some measurement of publicity.
McGregor and Mayweather have much bigger fish in their respective sports. Conor will look to become only the 2nd featherweight champion in UFC history by defeating Jose Aldo on July 11th, while Mayweather has his long awaited May 2nd showdown with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.
