Rafael dos Anjos’ performance against Anthony Pettis sure has drawn some attention towards the Brazilian’s skillset because of the way he handled “Showtime”. However, not all of that attention was positive, as the sudden pristine technique and focus exhibited by the new UFC lightweight champion raised a few eyebrows over whether or not Dos Anjos was on some illegal substance during the bout.
Lightweight contender, Bobby Green was one of those who claimed it was rather obvious Dos Anjos was using something because of the way he was able to perform even though he fought with an injured knee.
“[Pettis], you didn’t do nothing wrong, you just don’t know what happened because you got bamboozled, you got played,” Green told BJPenn.com. “Look at him, look at your body look at his body. This guy goes five rounds non-stop, takes every shot like nothing, come on now.”
“I sparred with him personally, I felt it. I was like there’s something here. There’s something a little bit different here. I knew what was going to happen to Ant, I knew what was going to happen,” he said. “It’s [like] how Barry Bonds started hitting home runs.”
Dos Anjos, on the other hand, thinks Green is only looking to draw attention to himself.
“People want to talk and be in the spotlight, nobody wants to give credit,” Dos Anjos told Combate in Portuguese. “Even though my post-fight test came back clean, people still want to talk about it and not value what I conquered. You have to learn how to deal with that. People just like to badmouth.”
“Bobby Green can think whatever he wants, but next time I train with him, I won’t take it easy like I did before,” he said. “He was always nice and humble to me before, telling me he was a huge fan and now he does this? I guess he wants to be noticed. I only met him once, only trained with him once, he’s not my friend or anything to me”.
For Rafael, that might be just the tip of the iceberg. He believes the more famous he gets, more and more fighters will try and do the same.
“It’s a frustrated attempt to promote himself. Everybody now wants to try something. But you can’t only talk, you have to work. If your star doesn’t shine don’t try and extinguish mine.”
