Nate Diaz: ‘Everyone’s forgot the champ, it’s the McGregor show’

Nate Diaz was featured as a guest on the latest instalment of Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour. The troubling Californian is no stranger to pre-fight theatrics, often antagonising his opponents with trash talk and stern middle fingers, mirroring his older brother’s mischievous image. Conor McGregor eclipsed the rowdy Stockon code embodied in the Diaz DNA with his shocking belt snatch at Dublin’s UFC press conference. Here’s what Nate had to say about the drama in Ireland on The MMA Hour:

“[Aldo’s] team is f**king up,” Diaz said with a laugh on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “Because let me tell you something: if I had Conor fighting somebody like that, and they were going to make sure one of the guys gets up in your face, you smack his ass to the floor. You know what I’m saying? You don’t let somebody do that. Or just laugh at him. Like, [Aldo] got all bent out of shape when the guy took his belt. He should’ve just laughed at him, been like, ‘Keep the belt. This ain’t about the belt. It’s about your ass whooping.’ I would’ve let him have it. Take that home and put it on.”

The 155/170-pounder continued by expressing his appreciation of McGregor’s outlandish behaviour:

“But hey, Conor McGregor, he’s doing his thing. He’s doing a good job of that and I’m not hating on him. I think he’s doing a great job marketing himself. Everybody’s forgotten who the champ is already because it’s the McGregor show”, Diaz told Helwani.

During the UFC’s exhaustive world tour, the Irishman boasted of a move to the 155lb division, warning Rafal dos Anjos that he’s coming to seize lightweight gold after he’s captured the featherweight strap at UFC 189. Diaz is more than happy to welcome McGregor to 155lb shark tank (if the money’s worth it of course):

“Conor McGregor keeps talking about coming up and fighting dos Anjos. I don’t know what that’s gonna do for him. That guy’s got like 10 followers or some s**t. So if these guys want some real fights, then they can call and work it out, or if I can figure it out, I’m game to fight if the money is going to be worth it”, Nate said on The MMA Hour.

The latest controversy surrounding a Diaz brother is Nate’s apparent nescient attitude regarding his future scrap with Matt Brown. According to Diaz, a welterweight showdown with ‘The Immortal’ was never negotiated, but Brown has uploaded an image of the signed contract pitting him against the Californian. Diaz and Brown are expected to clash alongside Aldo and McGregor for the UFC 189 extravaganza on July 11.
