The UFC’s signing of CM Punk has been nothing if not controversial for them. Lauded by fans who are eager to see something different out of the brand/business first promotion, lambasted by fans who feel that the core identity of the UFC is the best fighting the best. No matter what side of that debate you’re on, it’s hard to deny that the pro-wrestler turned pro-fighter hasn’t brought a lot of attention and interest with him.
One of the biggest sources of interest is the anticipation of Punk’s first fight, or more to the point, his first opponent. Ideas like “The Green Power Ranger” (and pro fighter) Jason David Frank have been bandied about, but just who the actual man standing across from CM Punk in the octagon will be is still very much a mystery.
Now it looks like another MMA novice is throwing his hat in the ring as a potential opponent. Former NFL linebacker and 3x Pro Bowler Shawne Merriman. Merriman called out Punk on the Fox Sports Live show @TheBuzzer.
It’s personal! Shawne Merriman has beef with CM Punk and would love a shot at him. This is FOX Sports Live @TheBuzzer

Going all the way back in the wayback machine (h/t Fox Sports) here’s the original Twitter beef that started it all:
@CMPunk I was just giving you guys some hope look like you were struggling by the pool. Sympathy from Lights

@shawnemerriman if you could get to a QB as fast as you ran after our divas maybe you’d make headlines being a pro bowler and not a creep.

Not sure how well his ability to tackle well will translate to the cage, but then again I’m not sure how much pro wrestling Punk will be able to bring with him either. What do you think, has the UFC found their fight?
