It’s been almost a full year since we last saw Carlos Condit inside a UFC Octagon, and the end result wasn’t pretty. He suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his knee injury TKO loss to Tyron Woodley at UFC 171, which dropped him to 1-3 in his last 4 fights. “The Natural Born Killer” is ready to make his return, and on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, Ariel Helwani reported that Condit could face Thiago Alves in either late May or early June. The two men, as well as UFC officials, have expressed interest in this potential welterweight showdown.
Condit (29-8) has hit a rough patch after winning the interim belt against Nick Diaz in February 2012. His incredibly difficult strength of schedule includes losses to Georges St-Pierre, Johny Hendricks, and Woodley. Condit did pick up a 4th round TKO against Martin Kampmann in August 2013, avenging his UFC debut loss to him way back in 2009.
Alves (21-9) is coming off an incredible, come-from-behind body kick TKO over Jordan Mein at UFC 183. The former UFC title challenger also defeated Seth Baczynski last year, and this is his first winning streak since his 2007-2008 run that led to his title shot against GSP. Injuries have prevented the Brazilian from competing on a regular basis, but if he can stay healthy he certainly can be at least a very exciting gatekeeper in a deep division.
Nothing is official yet, but signs are promising for Condit to get back in the cage against a highly skilled, former top 10 fighter who still has name value. We’ll keep you updated on a possible Condit vs. Alves match-up as soon as any new information emerges.
