It’s been brewing for weeks. No, months. No, years. But, it sounds like the deal to make one of the biggest boxing matches in recent history is done. TMZ reports that a date has been set for Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather and that date is May 2nd, in Las Vegas. Since it’s publication, Yahoo Sports has confirmed the news. While we knew that date was a possibility back in January, it appears that Mayweather has finally signed on to the deal, so all systems should, effectively, be go.
It sounded like the two fighters were close when they were spotted talking at a recent NBA game. Reportedly, aside from their public meeting, the two men met privately as well, to try and hash out a deal and keep negotiations between their management from stalling out. In the meantime, Showtime Sports exec Stephen Espinoza was quick to deny rumors that a deal was about to be completed. He even went so far as to dismiss TMZ’s report on the potential deal, outright. Kevin Iole denied the rumors as well, but this time around he’s reporting them. Pacquiao spoke to Yahoo Sports to confirm the fight:
“I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years,” said Pacquiao, who signed the contract for the bout Thursday. “They have waited long enough and they deserve it. It is an honor to be part of this historic event. I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world.”
There you have it folks. It’s finally happening. Now we just need to get these next two months over with, with the deal still intact.
