Sorry Ireland. The UFC won’t be renting out a stadium in Eire for Conor McGregor’s title fight against champion Jose Aldo. Instead the Featherweight (145 pounds) clash will take place on the familiar UFC stomping grounds of Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
McGregor broke the news in today’s UFC 183 live Fan Q&A and UFC.com added some details in a follow up post.
McGregor defeated Denis Siver at UFC Fight Night: Boston a few weeks ago to run his Octagon record up to 5-0 and earn a title shot. Aldo is the only featherweight champ the promotion has ever had with seven straight title defenses under his belt since being given the title when the UFC absorbed the old World Extreme Combat promotion.
UFC 189 will cap the annual International Fight Week in Vegas. Here’s how UFC.com describes it, “Kicking off on July 7 and running through July 12, IFW 2015 will include the latest edition of the UFC Fan Expo, as well as the Ulti-Man 5K, UFC Gym Fitness Challenge, pool parties, free concerts, tournaments and more.”
The UFC had floated the idea of holding Aldo vs. McGregor in a Dublin soccer stadium but apparently thought better of it.
