On a night when the two Swedish fighters preceding Alexander Gustafsson on the UFC on Fox 14 bout order were unable to get the win, the crowd was anticipating Gustafsson to buck the losing skid and beat Anthony Johnson to clinch himself a title shot. Instead, the American walked way victorious and left Sweden’s MMA representatives winless on an historic evening in Stockholm.
After an early eye poke by Gustafsson, Johnson dropped the Swede with a hard right hand. Gustafsson was forced into an extended recovery mode. Rumble continued to chase him around the cage, firing away his right hand and trying to catch him with his vaunted high kick. He poured on the pressure and forced Gustafsson to drop to the canvas again. Gustafsson continued to take punch after punch as the crowd looked on in shock. After several left hands forced Marc Goddard to stop the fight, and quite honestly it should’ve been stopped sooner. Anthony Johnson def. Alexander Gustafsson via TKO (punches) at 2:50 of round 1 and clinches a light heavyweight championship bout with Jon Jones.
Here are Jon Jones’ thoughts on the performance of his future opponent:
