When the UFC announced their new sponsorship deal with Reebok, president Dana White explained that champions would have the opportunity to negotiate their own special contracts. Well, it looks like Conor McGregor is an exception to that rule.
The Irishman announced his own deal with the sportswear brand on FOX Sports 1 yesterday, joining the likes of UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and others, who also have their own respective partnerships with Reebok.
‘The Notorious’ immediately took to Twitter to congratulate the billion dollar brand on ‘netting the biggest signature in the game’, with a picture of him sporting his new Reebok apparel.
Shortly afterwards, Reebok also announced the new partnership on their own Twitter account, assuring McGregor that from now on, they will be ‘in his corner’.
In a UFC press release, Reebok Brand President Matt O’Toole says
“Conor’s hard work, determination and confidence have gotten him to where he is today. His passion and his commitment to continual self-improvement are a true reflection of the Reebok brand.”
The 26-year old Irish represents Reebok’s first UFC athlete from Europe and might be a key asset in their ongoing expansion into the MMA market, the press release reads:
McGregor will play an important role in launching Reebok’s new collection of footwear and apparel specifically created for the 35 million people around the world who train like fighters.
As of right now, there is no information on the details of his contract available. McGregor will wear his Reebok gear for the first time in action this Sunday, when he faces Dennis Siver in the main event of UFC Fight Night 59 in Boston, MA.
