England’s Brad Pickett was unable to generate any significant success at flyweight, so he’s headed back to bantamweight. Holding a 135 lbs win over current 125 lbs champion Demetrious Johnson, Pickett aimed to run the flyweight gauntlet and earn his shot at the title, but an unimpressive 1-2 record combined with the difficulties of the weight cut have forced him to switch weight classes again. “I’m going to go back up a weight class [back to bantamweight],” Pickett revealed, having moved to 125lbs in the hope of getting a UFC title fight. But after back-to-back losses, he’s returning to where he is comfortable. “The weight cut was tough for me to make but also the match-ups in that weight class are just not that interesting to me. It’s not fun chasing a guy for 15 minutes in the hope he’ll fight you.
“I’m too old for that now. I want to be involved in good fights. A fight I’d like to have at bantamweight is someone like Mizugaki. He’s an old veteran, I’m an old veteran and we’d both slug it out and put on a great fight for the fans. That’s what it’s all about for me now.”
It’s a move that makes plenty of sense for the 36-year-old Pickett, and the Mizugaki suggestion is a terrific one. Both men are coming off losses and are otherwise highly unlikely to contend again at bantamweight. This definitely qualifies as a “fun fight” between two guys who don’t possess much in the way of KO power but definitely have the volume and tendency to get into slugfests.
