The UFC 181 card kicked off with two fights that aired on Fight Pass, and both of them were pretty entertaining. Both went to decision, but there were good striking exchanges and some fancy grappling in each of them. In the end though, it was Clay Collard and Sergio Pettis that picked up victories.
The opening bout took place in the featherweight division with Alex White taking on Collard. Collard had White wobbled early and it could have been a short night for him, but White managed to come back with some hard strikes of his own. Collard secured a nice triangle in the second round but White again escaped. White was clearly down two rounds going into the third, and he managed to land some nice shots and take the stanza. Too little too late though, as Collard took the decision with three 29-28 scores.
Pettis was dropped early by opponent Matt Hobar in their bantamweight bout, but was able to recover quickly and hurt Hobar with his own strikes. He probably dropped the first round, but took over in the second and third with sturdy takedown defense and precision striking. The younger brother of Anthony Pettis won a unanimous decision with two 29-28 scores and one 30-27 card.
