The Fox Sports 2 prelim card for UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Saint Preux in Uberlandia, Brazil featured six fights. Those fights included a 31 second TKO, 2 submissions, one red-hot Brazilian prospect being put through the meat grinder courtesy to earn his first UFC decision win and two guys who got eliminated early on in the Ultimate Fighter Latin America showing just how far Latin American MMA has to go to catch up with the U.S. and Brazil.

The quick KO belonged to Middleweight Caio Magalhaes who caught Trevor Smith with a mean knee to the face and followed with a liberal sprinkling of hammer fists to the back/side of the head.

Lightweight Leandro Silva was underneath Charlie Brenneman for most of their fight, but Brenneman made the mistake of letting Silva take his back and he only needed about 30 seconds to get the RNC submission.

Welterweight Colby Covington pissed off the Brazilian fans with a text book example of American wrestle-boxing against Wagner Silva. He put Silva through the grinder before getting the third round submission.

Undefeated 23-year-old Bantamweight prospect Thomas Almeida showed why our own Patrick Wyman named him the #4 prospect in the world in February in a hard-fought win over veteran Tim Gorman. Gorman busted up Almeida’s face throughout the fight with a stiff jab and threatened with a RNC submission attempt from Almeida’s back in the first. But Almeida showed off some very slick combinations and repeatedly staggered Gorman with knees, standing elbows and wicked liver punches en route to a unanimous decision win.

And the two TUF guys – Diego Rivas and Rodolfo Rubio – put on a show of semi-pro MMA with some high-spirited, if sloppy grappling exchanges and the less said about their striking the better. I’m still scratching my head as to why it was the headliner on the FS2 card. They tussled around for three very long rounds before Rivas took a unanimous decision

Quick results:

  • Diego Rivas def. Rodolfo Rubio via unanimous decision (30-27×3)
  • Caio Magalhaes def. Trevor Smith via TKO (knee + punches) at 0:31 of RD 1.
  • Leandro Silva def. Charlie Brenneman via submission (RNC) at 4:15 of RD 1.
  • Thomas Almeida def. Tim Gorman via unanimous decision (30-27×2, 29-28)
  • Colby Covington def. Wagner Silva via submission (RNC) at 3:26 of RD 3
