There’s been a change of main event for this evening’s Titan FC 31 show at the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL. Mike Ricci and Yoshiyuki Yoshida were the original headliners for the vacant lightweight belt, but Ricci missed weight and Yoshida withdrew from the bout today (and lost his job), so in their place is a featherweight tussle between Miguel Torres and Desmond Green.
Torres (43-7) is best remembered for being an absolute terror in the WEC and the undisputed #1 bantamweight in the world. Prior to his fight against Brian Bowles, analyst Frank Mir went as far as declaring that Torres had a case for being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. One dramatic knockout by Bowles not only put an end to Torres’ stranglehold on the division, but it sent his career spiralling downward. After posting a 37-1 record, Torres proceeded to lose 6 of his next 9 fights, which included a 2-2 spell in the UFC and an 0-2 stint in World Series of Fighting. Miguel has since won his last 3 fights, upping his featherweight record to 3-1.
Green (11-3) is familiar to fans of Bellator, as the 25-year-old has participated in two of the promotion’s featherweight tournaments. While his first crack at a title shot ended in an immediate quarterfinal elimination, Green made it all the way to the season 10 final, coming up short against Daniel Weichel. In an effort to trim down the roster as part of Bellator’s Scott Coker-led new direction, Green was not only released, but the promotion did it via e-mail. Now with Titan FC, Green aims for a fresh start and a win against one of the most formidable names in the sport.
Also on tonight’s card is undefeated heavyweight prospect Ken Hasegawa, former World Series of Fighting competitor Tyler Stinson, and ex-UFC welterweight Brock Jardine.
