Phil Davis was able to do what he wanted to do in the first round of his UFC 179 co-main event with Glover Teixeira, taking him down, keeping tight to him and landing some good body punches from those positions.
Round two saw Teixeira score on the feet a few times, but Davis was, again, able to get the takedown and start to work before Teixeira had a brilliant reversal to get out of trouble. Davis went right back to it though and controlled the rest of the round.
It left Teixeira’s corner to ask their fighter to get a knockout in round three, knowing they were clearly out of range of winning on the scorecards.
Teixeira landed a good left hand early in the third, but Davis drove him right back into the cage. From there it was more takedowns, more control and even some cradle work from Davis.
Davis took the fight on the scorecards, taking every card 30-27.
