Vitor Belfort became unhappy about having to wait two more months to fight for the UFC Middleweight title. His bout against Chris Weidman was delayed from UFC 181, on December 6, for February of 2015. The reason was a broken hand but “The Phenom” isn’t convinced about it, according to his interview to Combate.com.
“I didn’t believe in the beginning, after all, it’s his second straight belt defense that had to be delayed because of an injury. I think that all titleholders that have more than one injury, the UFC should create an interim title in their divisions. Nobody would lose, not the fans, not the fighters, not the UFC, only the injured athlete.”
Belfort was then reminded that he had to cancel a fight against Wanderlei Silva because of a broken hand, in June 2012.
“Injuries are part of the sport, because we have to train at a high level pace. But hurting himself twice in a row with such little time of career? Are you kidding me? To me, he wanted to keep his belt during the christmas and that was the only way.”
When the fight actually comes to fruition, Belfort will have ended a 15-month layoff but he isn’t worried.
“I haven’t fought in the UFC but we have daily fights at Blackzilians. Just see our team. As I said before, when a champion hurts himself more than once, it should have an interim title in the line. I want to fight.”
Belfort fought for the last time at UFC Fight Night 32, when he KO’d Dan Henderson in the first round, on November of 2013. “The Phenom” is on a three-fight win streak of head kick KOs.
