Fabricio Werdum sees himself taking Cain Velasquez down at UFC 180

Two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, Fabricio Werdum is confident he’ll be able to use his ground game skills against Cain Velasquez and not only from the bottom. The next challenger for the UFC Heavyweight title told Ag. Fight that he plans to take the champion down in their upcoming bout at the main event of UFC 180, on November 15.

“I can see myself taking him down and putting him in danger while he plays guard or gives his back when standing up. I can be on top of him by taking him down, reversing or getting his back, all these hypotheses are possible. He’s the favorite, he has a very tough game and he’s hard to beat, but it’s better for me to not even fight if I don’t believe in myself. I’m sure that I’ll have a great performance.”

Werdum also promises to be in the top of his game.

“I’ve always been the underdog, so this motivates me a lot. I’m going to be very well trained and will havie no excuse for not being prepared or 100 per cent. I’m very focused on bringing this belt back to Brazil. I’m preparing physically and technically to bring my game to him and not allow the opposite to happen.”

According to the UFC’s official statistics, Velasquez has 78 percent of successful takedown defence, having been put on the ground only by Brock Lesnar and Cheick Kongo but hasn’t spent much time on the bottom.

After being the first fighter to take Travis Browne down, Werdum wants to accomplish the even tougher task of taking down Cain. People should take his chances seriously, after all this is the man who submitted Fedor Emelianenko.
