Floyd Mayweather def. Marcos Maidana by unanimous decision (115-112, 116-111 x 2)
The Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana fight was much anticipated, and for good reason. In their first fight in May, Maidana had much success against Mayweather, getting inside, roughing him up, and making it a fight. Here, many felt he would take that same strategy to make it even closer or perhaps even win.
It didn’t play out that way.
Instead, Floyd Mayweather did what Floyd Mayweather does best – he shut his opponent’s game down effectively and managed to dominate the fight. With a combination of footwork, defensive movement, counter punching, and clinching on the inside, Mayweather prevented Maidana from landing many shots. At the same time, he landed the cleaner punches himself, though never seriously hurting Maidana.
As the fight progressed, things got a bit ugly, including a very strange round 8 where Mayweather argued that Maidana bit him on the hand during a clinch. The home stretch of the fight was characterized by low blows, excessive clinching, and a point deduction for shoving for Maidana.
But in the end, we got the fight most analysts predicted we would get when these men first met – a pretty typical Floyd Mayweather win.
Post-fight, Mayweather was, inevitably, asked about fighting Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather stated that he would next fight in May, and that he would consider a Pacquiao fight, but that nothing was set. Clearly, don’t hold your breath.
Also on the card, Leo Santa Cruz scored an easy 2nd round KO win over an outmatched Manuel Roman, Mickey Bay took a controversial decision win over Miguel Vasquez in a pretty boring fight, and James De La Rosa handed Alfredo Angulo his 3rd straight loss, taking an easy decision win over the fan-friendly Angulo.
