There is no doubt about it: Ronda Rousey is one of the biggest stars in the UFC today and Dana White has no problem shouting it from the rooftop if necessary.
The UFC President has never been one to balk at an opportunity to heavily promote the promotion’s latest heroine. Following rapid-fire victories over Sara McMann and Alexis Davis in her latest title defences, White has proclaimed Rousey to be the new Mike Tyson.
“[It’s] like saying they should have had some better fights for Mike Tyson,” White told The Los Angeles Times. “The Tyson era was one of the most awesome eras in boxing history.”
White’s reasoning behind this lofty comparison is simple: Whether Rousey wins a fight in five seconds or five rounds it is still must-see television that will leave any given audience satisfied at its conclusion.
“You hear Ronda Rousey’s last fight went 16 seconds and you’re like, ‘Sixteen seconds?’ But what she did in those 16 seconds was un … believable. For 16 seconds, she traded punches, knocked [Davis] out with one, caught her under her arm, kneed her to the stomach, threw her and then hit her with about 15 punches. That all happened in 16 seconds.”
Rousey only added to that sentiment when she explained that unpredictability was the main advantage she had over her opponents, which also translates well with the audience since they can never envision the outcome.
“You never know what’s going to happen in one of my fights, either. That’s the advantage I have over my opponents and what draws the fans in so much. From the second my fight starts to the second it’s over, nobody sits down.”
