In the aftermath of yet another winning performance by undefeated Icelander Gunnar Nelson, UFC president Dana White has to field a lot of ideas for future opponents, some of them more silly than others.
For instance at yesterday’s post-fight press conference following UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Brandao, White was asked about the possibility of Nelson stepping up against veteran contender Rory MacDonald.
White’s reply was diplomatic, if indefinite, “Let me talk to the guys and see what they think. What I don’t like is you see these guys who are talented, super-talented but don’t have the big-fight experience yet, taking these big jumps up. But we’ll see what happens. Let me talk to his people, and talk to him, and really see what we want to do here.”
While Nelson may or may not be a match for MacDonald in terms of fighting ability, there’s no question as to which fighter has the greater big fight experience. Where Nelson has built his 13-0-1 record against the like of Zak Cummings, with the biggest name on his resume being Jorge Santiago, MacDonald has wins over the likes of Nate Diaz, B.J. Penn, Demian Maia, and Tyron Woodley.
