The last time the UFC went to Ireland was five years ago, when Dan Henderson won a close decision over Rich Franklin in the main event. Tom Egan was literally the only Irish fighter on the card — Marcus Davis doesn’t technically count — and he lost to John Hathaway by TKO. After a planned 2013 superfight between Sinead O’Connor and that woman from The Cranberries fell through, the UFC found its new Irish star in Conor McGregor. The featherweight KO artist was originally matched up against Cole Miller in the main event, but Miller pulled out citing injury and Diego Brandao has stepped up for what is scheduled to be a five-round fight.
Welterweight submission ace Gunnar Nelson is slotted in the co-main against Zak Cummings, who is filling in for the injured Ryan LaFlare. With Ali Bagautinov suspended and John Dodson injured, the stakes are even higher for the winner of Brad Pickett versus Ian McCall. Perhaps the winner could receive a title shot, particularly Pickett, who has a bantamweight win against Demetrious Johnson.
