Johan Perez and Mauricio Herrera kicked off the Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara pay-per-view with a fairly entertaining scrap that went to a close majority decision.
Perez came into the bout as the interim WBA light welterweight champ, having won the “title” in a bout with Paul Spadafora in November of last year.
Herrera lost a somewhat controversial decision against Danny Garcia in his last fight, coming up short via majority decision.
The two fighters, not particularly known for their power punching prowess, did sit down on some power shots in the later stages of the fight. In round eight they stood toe to toe, trading power shots and seeming to actually do some significant damage.
Herrera was the better fighter from the opening bell, however, working behind a solid jab to set up his offense and clearly outworking Perez in most rounds.
The judges did see the fight for Herrera, with one judge seeing it a draw and the other two seeing it 116-112.
