One of the true greats in mixed martial arts history has called it quits. Following a one-sided, third round TKO loss to Frankie Edgar in the main event of tonight’s UFC: Ultimate Fighter Finale card, Penn told Jon Anik that his career was over.
Penn explained that he should not have attempted to return to the sport for the fight, “Frankie did a great job. I shouldn’t have came back, I shouldn’t have been in the ring tonight.”
Anik asked Penn to clarify the status of his immediate future and Penn left no doubt,”Of course, Dana said it was over and I gotta agree with him at this point.”
Penn had previously retired following a loss to Nick Diaz, where he stated that he didn’t want to continue going home to his daughter looking beat up but returned and lost to Rory MacDonald.
Penn is only 1-5-1 since 2010 and has not won a fight since knocking out Matt Hughes in November of 2010, but retires as a sure fire UFC Hall of Fame inductee.
