Renzo Gracie prefers 10 minute rounds in MMA in favor of grappling

Member of the family that idealized the UFC, Renzo Gracie isn’t satisfied with the current rules of the organization. The Jiu-Jitsu master thinks that grappling exchanges can’t develop in a fight because of the time limit and 10 minute round – like in Pride – would be more appropriate, according to his interview to MSN.

The MMA of today isn’t set for Jiu-Jitsu fighters, I have no doubt of it. What a ground fighter can do in a five minutes round? Before, when rounds used to last ten minutes, things were different, you could take the opponent down after two minutes and a half, having seven minutes and a half to work the grappling. Now you achieve the takedown with a lot of difficulty and the opponent hold you until the fight gets back on the feet.

Renzo says that the UFC today is geared to show business.

UFC is turned to the show, to performance, but the martial art isn’t in the first place. People want to see bar brawls.

The 47-year old Brazilian hasn’t fought since April of 2010 – when he lost by TKO in the third round to Matt Hughes at UFC 112  – and he’s virtually retired.
