While both Johny Hendricks and Dana White were guests on Inside MMA on AXS TV on Friday night, Hendricks pitched an interesting idea.
Hendricks suggested a potential move up to 185 to fight current champion Chris Weidman in the kind of cross divisional superfight that the UFC has so often seen fall through in recent years. The suggestion seemed to catch people a little off-guard as both Hendricks and Weidman need to actually defend their respective titles.
Hendricks did say that he wasn’t talking about right now, but instead if both men were able to win a few more fights.
White seemed to shoot the idea down, as transcribed by Dave Meltzer at MMA Fighting:
“I don’t know about three or four fights,” he told Hendricks. “You are in a very nasty division packed with talent from No. 1 to No. 13. You have a lot of housework to do before you clean out the division and talk about Chris Weidman.
Hendricks said he was more being hypothetical and White responded, “Hypothetically, if No. 5 through No. 13 quit, maybe we can do you and Chris Weidman.”
So, it appears that White wants to see both men clean out their divisions before discussing a champion vs. champion bout.
