Judging by how hard the UFC is pushing him as a superstar, Conor McGregor is central to their plans in the future. At times ridiculously over-the-top, the hype has led to some backlash fans and fighters alike. McGregor has become the most often called out fighter on the UFC roster, with seemingly every featherweight who picks up a win calling for a chance to step in the cage with the Irish star.
Never one to pass up an opportunity to promote, World Series of Fighting executive VP Ali Abdel-Aziz set Mcgregor in his crosshairs while promoting the WSOF 10 title bout between Rick Glenn and Georgi Karakhanyan.
Abdel-Aziz was quoted by MMA Mania as saying, “When you guys are talking about fighters, Rick Glenn is one of the best 145’ers in the world. Conor McGregor is just a different caliber of fighter. I’m not going to talk bad about Conor or anybody, but Rick Glenn is at the top tier of the 145’ers in the world.”
He didn’t stop with that mild slight, instead doubling down on the statement, “It wouldn’t be even a fair match up. It would be an unfair match up, to fight someone like Georgi Karakhanyan at this point of his career. But the guy is promoting himself, and good for him. But if I was a matchmaker, I would not match them up with Georgi at all.”
Karakhanyan is on a nine fight win streak since being bounced from Bellator following a loss to Patricio Freire, his second in four fights for the company.
