Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski made his return to the organization last night in a bout that mot expected to end before the final horn. It didn’t turn out that way though, as Arlovski and opponent Brendan Schaub both turned in tepid performances that left fans frustrated. At the UFC 174 post-fight press conference, Arlovski was blunt about his performance despite a narrow win on the judge’s scorecards:
“Honestly, I felt and I still feel really horrible. I’m glad Dana White isn’t here because he’s probably so pissed at me.
“He gave me a great opportunity, and I didn’t like my performance, my fight, tonight.”
Arlovski (22-10, 1 NC) claimed that the dreaded octagon jitters are what got to him in Vancouver, even though he has competed in many big fights in his career:
“For some reason, I was nervous a lot,” he said. “Before the fight when I stepped in the octagon, my legs and hands shook for some reason. I was just nervous. It was like the first time I fought 14 years ago.”
“My plan was to knock him out, and it was left up to the judges. But like I said, I wasn’t happy with my performance tonight.
“Next time, I promise I’ll do much better.”
Schaub (10-4) was steamed about the judging after the fight, but didn’t exactly get a vote of confidence from White who said that the only people that lost the fight were the fans.
