Jake Ellenberger doesn’t understand the hype behind Tyron Woodley.
The longtime welterweight competitor has nothing personal against Woodley, but he simply does not understand how he deserves credit for his victory over Carlos Condit back at UFC 171.
The fight was ruled a TKO in favour of the former Strikeforce fighter, but it was the result of knee injury that Condit suffered early in the second round of the contest, which later turned out to be a torn ACL. Most fans and pundits have come to accept it as a fair victory, as it is not the first injury win seen inside the octagon, yet it is not one that Ellenberger is willing to give up a potential title shot over.
“It’s like, you’ve got a guy like [Tyron] Woodley.” Ellenberger told Submission Radio. “I mean, Condit getting hurt that’s disappointing, that stuff happens, but it’s like, you can’t give a title shot to a guy who’s, you know. If I’m fighting a guy and he gets hurt in the fight, I mean I didn’t beat him. I wouldn’t feel good. Sure he got hurt, but I didn’t submit him, I didn’t knock him out.”
With the welterweight title picture unclear, a Woodley victory in his co-main event match-up against Rory MacDonald at UFC 174 could potentially produce the next title challenger for Hendricks. This is not a proposition that Ellenberger takes kindly to.
“I could care less about Woodley and the fight with Rory. They’re both great guys, but I mean it’s crazy how fast you know, things change, people’s perspective change.”
Ellenberger is scheduled to meet Robbie Lawler in a feature fight on the UFC 173 fight card. The event takes place on May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
