Glory has just wrapped up their latest show, Glory 16 Denver, but already we are looking ahead to their next outing. The next time Glory takes to the ring will be Saturday, June 21 for their loaded show in Loa Angeles. That show will feature 3 parts – a shorter Superfight Series, Glory 17 live on Spike, and the Glory Last Man Standing PPV. As we previously reported, the PPV will feature a one night 8 man Middleweight world title tournament, plus a Heavyweight title fight between Rico Verhoeven and Daniel Ghita. Now, the fight card for the Spike portion and Glory 17 is starting to come together.
Headlining the show will be Mirko Cro Cop. The Pride, K-1, and UFC veteran comes in to this fight off a highly disputed decision loss to Remy Bonjasky – his first kickboxing loss since 2001. Great choice to feature Cro Cop on Spike, as he will surely draw in some more casual fans who will then perhaps stick around for the PPV. His opponent is yet to be determined.
Previously announced was Andy Ristie vs. Ky Hollenbeck, with the winner earning a shot at the Lightweight title, currently held by Davit Kiria. Lightweight is a very exciting division right now as everyone looks to cement his place as the new #1 – this will be a big opportunity for the winner.
Finally, the 4 man Featherweight tournament is beginning to take shape. In one semi-final Gabriel Varga (23-2) takes on Shane Oblonsky (N/A). Varga is ranked #5 at Featherweight and is 2-1 in Glory. He has solid experience, and should be considered a favorite here. Oblonsky will be fighting in front of a hometown crowd, and is a talented fighter, but has a tough outing here. In the other semi-final, Yodkhunpon Sitmonchai (83-21-1) faces an opponent TBA. Yodkhunpon is a traditional Muay Thai fighter coming in off an impressive win in Istanbul. This is a contender tournament, meaning the winner here will move on to a Featherweight title shot.
