Dana White confirms winner of Travis Browne vs Fabricio Werdum will face Cain Velasquez in Mexico

Cain Velasquez’s next UFC title defense will come against the winner of Travis Browne and Fabricio Werdum, according to UFC president Dana White. Browne and Werdum face off in the main event of the UFC’s next Fox event, this Saturday night.

The pattern for the Fox events has been to feature either lower weight class title fights or number one contender bouts in the more “prestigious” divisions, so this follows the usual methodology for these events.

Werdum is riding a three fight win streak since coming to the UFC from Strikeforce. He only fought once in 2013 and this will be his first fight in 2014. In fact, 2012 was the only year since 2009 where Werdum fought more than once in a calendar year, going 2-0.

Browne is on his own three fight win streak. His is the more impressive run, however, with three consecutive knockouts over Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett.

There is no date set for the winner’s bout with Velasquez, but this would be the UFC’s debut in Mexico.

Interestingly, Werdum handles Spanish announcing duties for the UFC, so he may be a better choice in terms of local promotion.
