Anderson Silva says he will not fight in 2014, ‘phase as champion is over’

Anderson Silva’s horrific leg break in his rematch with Chris Weidman had many suspecting that the all-time great would be forced to retire from fighting. Incredibly, Silva has seemingly made very quick strides in his recovery, being shown recently throwing kicks.

Despite the recovery, Silva will not be fighting in 2014, despite some rumors that he could be back before the end of the year. MMA Fighting has the quotes:

“These rumors that I’ll fight at UFC 181 or any other event around that date aren’t true,” Silva told Combate. “This year is over for me. There’s a chance I’ll fight in the first half of 2015.”

Whenever he returns to the cage, “The Spider” does not see himself fighting for the middleweight belt again.

“Anderson’s phase as the champion is over,” he said. “Fighting for (the title) is a little far away from me.”

Silva said that he also doesn’t plan on hanging up the gloves anytime soon, despite his family requesting that he call it quits.
