One of the few bad moments in an otherwise fantastic UFC 171 card was seeing Carlos Condit crumple to the canvas clutching his knee after taking a Tyron Woodley leg kick to the opposite leg. Condit had injured the right knee moments before when taken down by Woodley.
Sherdog has some word on the initial diagnosis:
While severity of that injury remains unclear, the worst-case scenario could mean a lengthy rehab for the former interim welterweight champion. Condit was taken to a hospital shortly after his loss to Woodley, where he was diagnosed with a possible small meniscus tear as well as a potential torn ACL, Jackson’s MMA general manager Ricky Kottenstette informed Sherdog.com on Sunday.
The report also states that Condit will undergo an MRI this week following the reduction of some of the swelling to get a final diagnosis.
Condit’s injury is unfortunate on a number of levels. His bout with Woodley was shaping up as compelling and easily could have determined the number one contender at welterweight, but the knee injury puts an asterisk next to Woodley’s victory, even though he’d performed admirably to that point.
Also, Condit is a fantastic fighter to watch perform but one who, at age 29, has already fought 37 times dating back to September 2002. He hasn’t fought more than twice in a year since 2007. And the rehab from this injury isn’t going to change that this year.
