With seven finishes in his eight WEC fights, Jose Aldo was named the UFC Featherweight champion after the merger of the two organizations. Since then Aldo has come under fire for fighting safe in his six successful title defenses. The “Scarface” understands that playing safe is a natural path for a titleholder and told Tatame.com that he thinks the same will happen with Renan Barao, his fellow champion and training partner at Nova Uniao.
The champion has a lot to lose. The challenger can give everything of himself, he has nothing to lose. If he wins, he will be beating the champion. In the future, I think Renan will think one more time before doing some strikes. There’s a part of him that is more cautious and we are always talking to him about how best to win his fights.
Barao has finished three of his four title fights in UFC yet and holds the promotion’s Bantamweight belt. Aldo doesn’t see this dominance ending anytime soon:
I think Renan will be the champion for eight or ten years. He is going to rule his division for a lot of time. He is a young guy and he knows he can’t be in his comfort zone.
