There were a lot of expectations surrounding UFC Fight Night Mousasi vs. Machida’s co-main event. Ronaldo Souza’s well rounded dynamic boxing, wrestling, and masterful Jiu Jitsu game poses a unique problem for every fighter in the middleweight division. Thus far in his UFC carreer Francis Carmont has proven to be a picture of grinding top control and overwhelming athleticism. he’s bested several strong, talented fighters with his drive and determination and stifling control (and a strong knowledge of point-fighting technique). Could Jacare make trouble for Carmont with his highly touted technical grappling and powerful striking? Or, would Carmont be able to continue his run toward the top of the division with another controlled, judge-friendly performance?
Now Carmont knows how Costa Philippou felt. It was pure positional dominance from Jacare in the first and the third as he rode out back control on Carmont. Carmont was able to keep the fight on the feet in the second and stole the round with his no-selling of Jacare’s boxing and his own pressure offense, but otherwise turned in a completely lackluster performance that saw him wearing the looks of pure frustration often sported by his opponents. Jacare talked of a lingering elbow injury after the fight, which may have accounted for his trouble finishing his RNC attempts.
