I’m not even sure why I write these things any more. Other than Thiago Silva, it seems like the UFC hasn’t actually released anyone in ages. Unless they go buck wild and drop a bunch of fighters at once, it seems more and more like they’re choosing to keep people around a lot longer than they used to. Nonetheless, I will continue on my merry way and point out who needs a win at UFC Fight Night 36.
The card is decent overall, but not mind-blowing. Just nine of the 24 fighters on the card are coming off a UFC win, with four making their UFC debuts. 11 are coming off a loss, but only one is on a multi-fight losing streak. And even that guy (Charles Oliveira) probably isn’t in imminent danger. So what does that mean? Well, it means this list is going to be pretty short. I don’t think a single fighter is likely to get cut if they lose, so I’ll just going straight to the guys that might be on the bubble.
Likely to be cut with a loss
Nobody.
Possibly cut with a loss
Andy Ogle – I don’t really think they’d cut a British fighter unless they really have to, but Ogle could be potentially in trouble with a loss. That would drop him to 1-3 in a stacked division and he hasn’t looked super impressive in his three fights. But unless he gets totally blown out, there’s not a great chance of him getting the boot.
Cristiano Marcello – He’s in exactly the same position as Ogle but he’s at lightweight and he’s Brazilian. From TUF Live, 1-2 in three fights in the UFC so far. They gave him a beatable opponent, so if he can’t get this done it might be the end for him. Especially considering he’s 36. Of the three guys here, he’d be the most likely.
Maximo Blanco – He’s had some decent fights so far, but his illegal knee to Akira Corassani was just dumb, and it handed him his third loss in four fights across the UFC and Strikeforce. Despite his action style, dropping a fourth in five is not a good thing and it could lead the promotion to give up on him.
